Research Day 75: Richard Feynman – Simple Thinking, Curiosity & "The Ostrich Rule" ⚛️🎨🥁

Hey Axelle!

Yesterday, we unrolled the parchment blueprints of Leonardo da Vinci to see
how art and science connect. Today, we are grabbing a set of bongo drums
and pulling up a chair with one of the most brilliant, playful, and funny
physicists of the 20th century: Richard Feynman (pronounced Fine-man).

Feynman won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in quantum
electrodynamics, but he was the exact opposite of a boring, stuffy
professor! He cracked safes for fun, played bongo drums in samba bands,
drew nude portraits and art sketches, and loved solving big universe
riddles like they were playground games.

Feynman was famous for his absolute hatred of jargon—big, pretentious
words people use to sound smart. He believed that if you truly understand
something, you can explain it so simply that an 8-year-old can understand
it!
💡 Today’s Mind-Bender: The Feynman Technique & "The Ostrich Rule"

Feynman had a famous rule about real learning vs. fake learning: Knowing
the name of something is NOT the same as understanding it.


He gave a famous story about walking in the woods with his dad:

"See that bird? It's a Spencer’s Warbler. In Italian, it’s a Chiffchaff.
In German, it’s a Haltsmayer. You can know the name of that bird in all the
languages of the world, but when you’re finished, you’ll know absolutely
nothing whatever about the bird! You’ll only know about people, and what
they call the bird. Now, let’s look at the bird and see what it’s DOING..."

The Ostrich / Jargon Trap: People often bury their heads in the sand
like an ostrich behind big fancy words ("quantum decoherence", "synergistic
paradigm") to hide that they don't actually understand what's going on!

The Feynman Solution: Strip away the fancy jargon! Pretend you are
explaining your idea or story concept to a curious 8-year-old. If you can
explain it in simple, punchy, vivid words, you have mastered it!

The Big Life Secret: Great artists and writers don't confuse their
audience with overly complicated, confusing mess. They take big, deep,
complex feelings and ideas and explain them with razor-sharp simplicity and
high energy!

The Big Question: "Think of a complex idea, science topic, or story plot
you know about. How would you explain it to an 8-year-old using only simple
everyday words and a funny analogy?"

Feynman (especially from his book The Pleasure of Finding Things
Out
). Pick
ONE extra quote
that catches your eye. Explain why you chose it, what
it means to you as a creator, and record it in your research log!

Feynman Diagrams: Look up Feynman Diagrams—the simple, squiggly
doodle-pictures he invented to show how subatomic particles interact.
Notice how he used simple art lines to make complex physics visual!

Feynman) playing bongo drums while squiggly subatomic particles and glowing
