Research Day 82: Isaac Newton – Splitting White Light into Hidden Rainbows 🌈🍎🔮
Hey Axelle!
Yesterday, we searched for sea dragons in the stormy cliffs with Mary Anning. Today, we are stepping into a dark room in 17th-century Cambridge, England, to meet one of the most brilliant (and intensely curious) scientists who ever lived: Sir Isaac Newton.
You might already know Newton for his famous falling apple and his discovery of gravity—the invisible force that pulls everything toward the Earth. But Newton was also completely obsessed with optics and color!
In his time, people believed that white light was pure and clean, and that colors like red, blue, and green were created when white light got "stained" or "dirty" passing through objects. Newton didn't accept that guess. He bought a simple glass pyramid—a prism—put it in front of a tiny beam of sunlight coming through his window shutter, and proved something astounding:
White light isn't plain at all! It is a bustling, hidden party made up of every color of the rainbow (ROYGBIV) blended together!

When white sunlight hits a glass prism, each color bends at a slightly different angle because of its wavelength. Violet bends the most, and red bends the least!
To double-check his experiment, Newton placed a second upside-down prism in front of the colorful rainbow beam, and guess what happened? The rainbow merged right back into pure white light!
