The Lost City of Petra ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Good morning, Axelle! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Deep in the desert of Jordan, there's a city carved right into pink rocks. It's called Petra, and it's so amazing that it's one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The Big Question: How did ancient people build a whole city out of cliffs, and why did it disappear for centuries?

The Mission:
1. Find out who built Petra โ€“ was it the Nabataeans? What were they famous for?
2. Discover how they carved the famous Treasury building โ€“ what tools did they use?
3. Imagine you are an explorer in 1812, when Petra was 'rediscovered' by a European traveler. Write a short diary entry about what you see.

The Science Check: What is sandstone, and why is it easy to carve? (Hint: it's made of sand and a natural glue.)

Did you know? Petra had a clever water system with tunnels and pipes, so people could live in the desert. They even had water 'cascades' coming out of the walls!

Have fuuuun!!!

Onward and Upward,
Mama & Papa
