The Library Hidden in Ice
Good morning, Axelle! ๐ Today we're going hunting for something truly astonishing: an entire library written in ice, buried deep under a glacier in Norway โ a library that might hold secrets from a thousand years ago.
The Big Question: How can frozen ice keep ancient secrets safe for hundreds of years?
The Mission:
1. Find out what an ice patch โ and the famous "Lendbreen" ice patch in Norway โ actually is, and why it's different from a glacier.
2. Discover what kinds of objects archaeologists have found melting out of the ice, like the 1,700-year-old tunic and the Roman sandal.
3. Learn why ice preserves things so well, and why climate change is making these finds appear โ and disappear โ so fast.
Did You Know? Some ice-patch finds are so perfectly preserved that scientists can still see the weave of the fabric and the stitching on a shoe!
Creative challenge: Draw or write about one object YOU would leave in the ice for a future explorer to discover.
Have fuuuun!!! ๐ก
