The Floating Village of Ganvié

Good morning, Axelle!

Today we're sailing to West Africa to explore a village built entirely on water. Imagine a town where every house stands on stilts above a lagoon! Let's dive in.

The Big Question: How does daily life work in a village where the ground is water?

The Mission:
1. Find Ganvié in Benin on a map. What body of water is it built on?
2. Why did the people originally build their village on stilts? (Hint: it has to do with safety.)
3. What are some challenges of living on water, and how do the residents overcome them?

Did you know? The name Ganvié means 'we survived' in the local language, and the village is often called the 'Venice of Africa' because of its canals and boats.

Have fuuuun!!!

Onward and Upward,
Mama & Papa
