The Whispering Gallery
Good morning, Axelle!
Today we're exploring a marvel of architecture where sound travels in mysterious ways. Imagine whispering in one corner and being heard clearly in another, 40 meters away!
The Big Question: How can a whisper travel so far without any electronics?
The Mission:
1. Find the Whispering Gallery in St. Paul's Cathedral, London. What shape is the gallery?
2. How does the curved surface affect sound waves?
3. Try to replicate a mini version: can you make a curved wall with cardboard and test whispering?
Did you know? The gallery is 30 meters above the cathedral floor, and even a pin drop can be heard on the other side!
Have fuuuun!!!
Onward and Upward,
Mama & Papa
