The Secret Life of Slime Molds

Good morning, Axelle! ๐ŸŒž

Today we're going to meet an organism that's neither plant, animal, nor fungus โ€” and yet it can solve mazes, remember where it's been, and even design efficient networks. It's called slime mold, and it might just be the strangest genius on Earth.

The Big Question: How can a creature with no brain solve problems and make decisions?

The Mission:
1. Find out what a slime mold actually is โ€” is it one cell or many? What does it eat?
2. Discover the famous Tokyo subway experiment: how did slime mold recreate a human-designed rail network?
3. Learn how slime mold remembers where it's been, even without a nervous system.
4. Look up one way scientists are using slime mold today โ€” from robots to computer design.

Did You Know? A slime mold can find the shortest path through a maze by leaving chemical trails and retracting from dead ends โ€” no brain required!

Creative Challenge: Draw your own slime mold map of your neighborhood โ€” where would it grow to find the best snacks?
