Bread That Made a City Rich
Good morning, Axelle!
Long before pizza, one Italian city was famous for something crunchy, chewy, and absolutely everywhere.
The Big Question: How did a simple food help build a great trading city?
The Mission:
1. Discover Venetian ship's biscuit (or biscotto) — the rock-hard bread sailors ate for months at sea.
2. Why did it last so long without spoiling? What was in it (or NOT in it)?
3. Try sketching a sailor's meal: biscuit, water, and... what else would you pack?
Did you know? Sailors sometimes had to soften ship's biscuit by soaking it in water — or knocking it on the table to shake out weevils!
Have fuuuun!!!
Onward and Upward,
Mama & Papa
