The Secret of Sea Silk
Good morning, Axelle! ๐
Today we're diving into one of the strangest fabrics in history โ cloth woven from the threads of a sea creature! It sounds like a myth, but it's completely real, and only a handful of people in the world still know how to make it.
The Big Question: How can a pinchy little clam-like animal produce golden thread that kings and queens once wore?
The Mission:
1. Find out which sea creature makes byssus threads and how it uses them to hold onto rocks.
2. Discover how people collect the threads and turn them into cloth โ and why it's so rare today.
3. Look up the last known sea-silk weavers and where their gloves and hats are kept in museums.
Did You Know? Sea silk is so delicate that a single pair of gloves can take a whole year to weave โ and the fabric glows like gold in sunlight!
Creative challenge: Draw your own magical underwater loom spinning golden threads.
Have fuuuun!!! ๐ก
